BOONE—Poetry is the focus at the March 8 Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series at Appalachian State University.
Featured will be husband and wife poets Vona Groarke and Conor O’Callaghan. They will speak from 2-3:15 p.m. during the craft talk “White Space: Narrative in Poems” in Plemmons Student Union’s Table Rock Room. [more]

More than 300 hearty souls braved high winds and cold water Thursday to participate in the ninth annual Polar Plunge benefiting Watauga County Special Olympics. Mike O’Conner, left, director of Appalachian Sate University’s Physical Plant, was among the first to take the plunge into the university’s duck pond off Rivers Street. The jumpers raised $12,266.76, the most in the event’s history. [more]

BOONE—A Feb. 27 recital at Appalachian State University will feature the Renaissance and Baroque era instrument known as the viola da gamba.
The performance begins at 6 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s recital hall. It will feature Eric Koontz from the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music and guest performers Alison Crum, Roy Marks, Carol March and Gail Schroeder. Alicia Chapman will play the Baroque flute. [more]
