Holiday break means week of service for some Appalachian faculty and students

BOONE—A dozen Appalachian State University students and two professors are heading to New Orleans today to help with the ongoing rebuilding efforts in the city’s lower ninth ward.

Since Hurricane Katrina hit the area in fall 2005, student volunteers have helped demolish houses that couldn’t be re-inhabited and repair those that could.

The students, along with assistant professors Dana Greene and James Peacock from the Department of Sociology and Social Work, will assist the non-profit organizations Hands On New Orleans and the Boys and Girls Club of New Orleans.

Students are paying their own airfare to make the trip. Food and housing will be provided by nonprofit agencies in the area.
