Appalachian Concert Band performs Nov. 29

BOONE—The Appalachian Concert Band from Appalachian State University’s Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music performs in concert Nov. 29 in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free.

Guest conductor Mark Whitlock directs the band’s performance of “Prelude,” “Siciliano” and “Rondo” by Malcolm Arnold. The composition reflects Arnold’s interest in folk songs and dance.

Whitlock is director of bands and a professor of music at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

John Stanley Ross from the Hayes School of Music directs Scott Boerma’s “Poem.” The piece was written in honor of Boerma’s high school band teacher.

Ross also conducts “Agora” by Carl Schroeder. The piece is an up-tempo fanfare commissioned for the Minnesota Symphonic Winds.

The band also will perform “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed. Scott Tobias from the Hayes School of Music conducts. Reed was 23 years old and a staff arranger for the 529th Army Air Corps Band when he wrote the piece in just 16 days to be performed at a holiday concert.
