Drop-in event celebrates Department of Theatre and Dance’s new space

BOONE – Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance and College of Fine and Applied Arts invite the community to celebrate the grand opening of the new dance wing in Varsity Gym.

The drop-in celebration will take place on Friday, Sept. 15, from 5-7 p.m. in Varsity Gym 202. The event will include food, beverages, music, art and live dance performances.

The dance program at Appalachian now has three full-time faculty members, a chairperson with a background in dance, and four to five part-time faculty to meet the needs of the ever-growing number of dance students.

The program’s old studio, housed in the demolished Broome Kirk Gym, has been replaced with a large studio for technique classes.

In addition, the new dance facilities include a fully equipped Pilates and Gyrotonic studio and a small studio for dance and related classes.

All three studios have proper sprung floors and mirrors.

The Department of Theatre and Dance anticipates starting a dance studies major in the fall of 2007.
