Concocting A Tasty Treat

Students in the Appalachian Chemical Society, better known as the Chemistry Club at Appalachian State University, wowed the crowd when they used liquid nitrogen to make ice cream during the club’s annual chemistry demonstration. Since nitrogen liquefies at

-321 F, anything that comes in contact with the gas freezes in less than 30 seconds, in this case a mixture of sugar, cream and chocolate chips. The demonstration was coordinated by faculty advisor Carol Babyak, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry.
