Helping Others

helpingothers.jpgAppalachian State University recently hosted the 13th Annual North Carolina Campus Compact Student Volunteer & Service-Learning Conference, which was attended by more than 200 students from 22 institutions. Students participated in workshops led by students who are actively involved in volunteer work, civic engagement and service-learning activities on their campuses. The conference also included presentations by representatives from the U.S. organization Raise Your Voice and the international organization Idealist/Action Without Borders. As part of the conference, a number of students (pictured) volunteered at Boone’s Shelter Rock Appalachian Relief, where they prepared shipments of food, clothing and toiletries for Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Katrina. Appalachian students are highly involved in the community. In the 2004-05 academic year, students provided an estimated $1.3 million of service to the community.
