Appalachian State University’s Broyhill Inn and Conference Center recently unveiled the newly renovated Helen A. Powers Grand Hall

042505ballroom_dl.jpg Formerly known as the Trillium Ballroom, the 6,400-square-foot banquet room has received a new look, thanks to a gift from Powers. Renovations include new carpeting, wood treatments and light fixtures. Powers, a resident of Asheville, was the first woman to serve as secretary of the North Carolina Department of Revenue. She was appointed to the post in 1985 by former Gov. Jim Martin, and held the position until 1990. She also was the first woman to become a senior vice president of a North Carolina bank, and the first business woman to be inducted into the North Carolina Business Hall of Fame. A portrait of Powers hangs in the room.
