Twin Bill of Concerts Performed Dec. 1

BOONE — Music lovers are in for a double treat Dec. 1. The Jazz Combo and the Concert Band at Appalachian State University will each present a free concert in Broyhill Music Center.

The Jazz Combo concert begins at 6 p.m. in the music center’s recital hall. Students will perform Roy Hargrove’s “All Over Again,” Robert Watson’s “E.T.A.” and “Heckle and Jeckle,” Sonny Stitt’s “The Eternal Triangle,” and other selections.

At 8 p.m., the Concert Band performs in Rosen Concert Hall.

The program features “Sun Dance” and “Loch Lomond” by Frank Ticheli. The band will also perform “At Dawn, They Slept” by Jay Bocook, which premiered in April 2002 at Pearl Harbor. The work depicts the U.S. military presence in Hawaii in the days preceding the Dec. 7, 1941, attack. As the piece progresses, the mood changes and the sound of approaching planes are depicted. The conflict builds, represented by percussion, brass and woodwinds.

The evening ends with “God of Our Fathers” by Claude T. Smith. The theme and arrangement of the classic hymn begins with an introduction from muted trumpets. The piece’s tempo builds with the addition of brass and percussion.
