Guitar Ensemble to Perform Nov. 30

BOONE — Appalachian State University’s Guitar Ensemble directed by Douglas James will perform in concert on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

For more information, call the Hayes School of Music at (828) 262-3020.

The Guitar Ensemble is composed of 33 guitarists. “The group uses nylon and steel string acoustic guitars, plus contrabass guitars and occasionally mandolins,” said James. The ensemble frequently plays symphonic works along with pieces specifically written for all-guitar ensembles.

The concert will include familiar selections from “The Nutcracker Suite,” such as “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Waltz of the Flowers.”

Compositions by Corelli and Tchaikovsky were originally written for an orchestra and have been arranged for guitars. A portion of the concert highlights small ensemble performances and soloists.

Erika Wuerzner, soprano, and Shawn Satler, guitar, will perform Mauro Giuliani’s “Cavatina, Op.39 No.3.” Jason Brust will perform the guitar solo “Rumores de la Caleta” composed by Isaac Albeniz.

Jessica Newsome, mezzosoprano, and Aubrey Benfield, guitar, will perform “Then you’ll remember me” from “The Bohemian Girl” composed by Michael W. Balfe and arranged by Herbert J. Ellis. They also will perform John Dowland’s “Come Again.”

Flutist Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham joins the ensemble for selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a,” arranged by David Robinson.

James is an active guitarist whose schedule includes performances throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. In 1992, James won the grand prize in the Arturo Toscanini Solo Guitar Competition held in Italy. In addition to directing the guitar program at Appalachian, James is coordinator of graduate studies in music for the Hayes School of Music.
