Folts Named Interim Chairman of Appalachian’s Sociology and Social Work Department

BOONE—Edward Folts has been named interim chairman of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Appalachian State University.

A member of Appalachian’s faculty since 1991, Folks replaces Lorin Baumhover who has been named interim dean of the university’s Cratis Williams Graduate School.

Folts directed Appalachian’s gerontology program from 1991-2000 and the master’s program in social science from 1999-2001. He more recently directed the undergraduate program in sociology.

Folts has held teaching posts at the University of North Texas and was a research associate at the University of Florida.

He co-edited the book “Housing and the Aging Population: Options for the New Century” and co-authored “Old Homes-New Families: Shared Living for the Elderly.” He was editor of The Southwest Journal on Aging from 1996-2002. Folts also has contributed chapters to several books on housing and the aging population, and adult day services.

Folts has a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Florida and a master’s and bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama.
