College Adventure Weekend Held April 2-4 at Appalachian

BOONE–Forty-five high school students from across the state will explore college options during a College Adventure Weekend held April 2-4 at Appalachian State University.

Participants will be selected from Talent Search, Upward Bound and GEAR UP programs in North Carolina.

The program will introduce students to the college experience by incorporating a traditional college visit with a hands-on learning experience where students will participate in physical challenges intended to simulate the emotional and psychological challenges of preparing for and attending college.

The event will be held at the university’s Camp Broadstone in Valle Crucis.

One of the goals of the College Adventure Weekend is to help young adults realize that the college preparation process begins well before their senior year of high school.

The weekend also will provide an opportunity for students of color and potential first-generation college students to explore and discuss the challenges students from underrepresented groups face in planning for and enrolling in college.

University personnel will help the students identify individual skills and strengths that will help them face those challenges.

Deadline for applications is Feb. 20. Any student interested in attending should contact Harry Williams at (828) 262-2070 or Susan McCracken at (828) 262-3066.
