Theater Program “They Don’t Live Here Anymore” Presented Nov. 3-4

BOONE–A readers theater performance of “They Don’t Live Here Anymore” will be presented Nov. 3-4 at Appalachian State University by students in Lees-McRae College’s Department of Performing Arts.

The presentation is sponsored by Appalachian’s Summer Reading Program and Freshman Seminar. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in I.G. Greer Auditorium. Admission is free.

In readers theater, narration is used to present dramatic material. Costuming and stage settings are kept to a minimum, if used at all.

“They Don’t Live Here Anymore” follows themes and issues addressed in the book “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America,” read by incoming freshmen as part of Appalachian’s Summer Reading Program. The piece includes stories, poems, photographs and music from Americans who have become homeless or are living on the edge of poverty.

It is directed by Janet Barton Speers, chair of performing arts at Lees-McRae College.
