Connecticut Couple Donate NASCAR Memorabilia Collection to Appalachian

BOONE–United Parcel Service and Appalachian State University’s Belk Library partnered recently to preserve materials documenting the history of stock car racing.

A Connecticut couple offered the library a sizeable donation to the stock car racing collection, but had no way to transport the materials to Boone. UPS, sponsor of a Winston Cup car on the NASCAR circuit, offered to deliver the materials free of charge.

A total of 23 boxes were picked up from donors Bruce and Liz Kuchta of Niantic, Conn., and delivered to the library a few days later.

UPS is the primary sponsor of the Robert Yates Racing No. 88 Winston Cup car driven by Dale Jarrett.

“UPS really came to our rescue,” says Suzanne Wise, stock car racing collection librarian. “They quickly understood the importance of acquiring the materials for the collection and preserving them for future researchers.”

The Kuchta donation includes nearly 1,200 issues of various racing magazines and newspapers, books, videocassettes, race programs, pamphlets and promotional materials.

“These items will enhance our resources considerably,” says Wise. “Some of the materials are difficult, if not impossible, to obtain. I have been trying unsuccessfully for several years to get a copy of one of the videos in the donation.”
