Appalachian Hosts Fall Family Day and Open House

082603openhouse_dl.jpgBOONE–Visiting campus is the best way to learn more about Appalachian State University. Prospective students and their parents are invited to a Fall Family Day and Open House Sept. 19-20 for an introduction to academic and social life.

On Friday, steel drum music played by Appalachian’s Steely Pan Steel Band begins at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Admission is charged. Campus movies will be shown at 7 and 9:30 nightly, featuring blockbuster films in I.G. Greer Auditorium for $1 and “silver screen classics” in Plemmons Student Union’s Greenbrier Movie Theater free of charge.

Saturday’s activities begin with an Appalachian Family Assembly from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the Holmes Center, featuring the university’s marching band, a multi-media presentation and comments by university representatives.

An Information Fair from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Holmes Center will offer opportunities to speak with representatives from academic departments, admissions, residence life, financial aid, athletics, freshman learning communities, and Watauga Residential College. Also during this time, Appalachian Student Ambassadors will lead 30-minute tours of campus beginning at the center’s northwest entrance.

Departmental Open Houses will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with faculty members available to answer questions, offer department tours and provide academic information.

Residence hall rooms will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A list of residence hall open houses will be provided at the Information Fair.

Prospective students and their parents are invited to stay for the 2 p.m. football game against Morehead State in Kidd Brewer Stadium. General admission tickets will be available at a reduced price during the Information Fair.

Parking is available in the following lots without charge: Hill Street, Thomas Hall and Edwin Duncan/Raley Hall. Disability parking will be available in the Holmes Center parking lot. Shuttle service will be provided from Hill Street and Raley Hall parking areas. Security officers will be available to direct traffic. Parking also will be available in the Rivers Street Parking Deck for a $5 charge.
