Youth Wind Ensemble Performs March 29

BOONE–The Appalachian Youth Wind Ensemble directed by Scott C. Tobias will present a free concert on Saturday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University.

This is the youth ensemble’s inaugural concert. The AYWE was formed in December 2002 and is comprised of high school students from western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and southern Virginia.

The auditioned group provides talented high school musicians with an additional performance opportunity outside of their normal school programs. The ensemble meets twice a month and will present two to three concerts annually.

The program features Malcolm Arnold’s “H.R.H. Duke of Cambridge March,” Derek Bourgeois’ “Serenade,” Stephen Melillo’s “Escape from Plato’s Cave” and Samuel A. Ward’s “America, the Beautiful.”

Tobias is an instructor of music and associate director of bands in Appalachian’s Hayes School of Music. He also directs the university’s Symphonic Band and marching band, the Marching Mountaineers.
