School of Music Performance Honors Alumni and Friends

By Shiona Christensen

BOONE–The Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University invites alumni, students and community members to a special performance Saturday, May 4.

The music school’s annual Honors Weekend concert will take place at 8 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall.

The program is free and open to the public.

In addition to the concert, The Society of Alumni and Friends will present the Outstanding Service Award and the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Outstanding teaching awards will be presented, and the Cratis Williams, Will Hester and William Presser scholarship recipients for the 2002-03 academic year will be announced.

Nominated by alumni and friends of the university for her overwhelming support of the School of Music, Mariam Cannon Hayes will receive the 2002 Outstanding Service Award.

Hayes is a graduate of Mount Vernon Seminary and Queens College.

Her connection to Appalachian began in 1969 when her father, Charles A. Cannon, established the Cannon Music Camp.

Throughout the years, Hayes’ philanthropy has supported many facets of the university, but none more so than the School of Music.
