Organ and Sacred Music Series Presents St. Mary of the Hills Church Choir

BOONE–Choral music inspired by biblical text and poetry will be performed by the choir of St. Mary of the Hills Church from Blowing Rock during the Organ and Sacred Music Series Sunday, March 3, at Appalachian State University.

James Bumgardner is the director.

The series is sponsored by the Hayes School of Music. The program begins at 4 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The program is a sampling of music performed for the church and includes a 16th century Swedish anthem, and songs sung at Advent, Christmas and Easter. The performance concludes with songs drawing attention to the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, including “O pray for the peace of Jerusalem” and “I vow to thee, my country.”

Soloists are Denise Story and James Rollins.

Bumgardner has a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian and a master’s degree in voice from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is completing work on a doctorate at UNC Greensboro. He has been a visiting voice coach for the National Opera Company.

The choir has sung at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in New York City and represented North Carolina at the National Cathedral in Washington last Advent. The choir also has sung services and concerts in Cambridge, Ely, Norwich and London, as well as New York City, Atlanta and throughout North Carolina.
