Yale-Read Receives Outstanding Faculty Award

callig.jpgBOONE–Barbara Yale-Read has received the Outstanding Faculty Award from Appalachian State University’s College of Fine and Applied Arts.

Yale-Read is an associate professor of art.

She received a $1,000 cash award made possible by contributions to the Appalachian State University Foundation, $500 from the college for professional travel or supplies, and a medallion to wear as part of the academic regalia.

Yale-Read teaches calligraphy, graphic design, typography, art history and introduction to art. She has been a member of the faculty at Appalachian since 1986.

She teaches students to be problem-solvers, said Dr. Ming Land, dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. “Her philosophy of service helps make her department, college, university and community a better place in which to work and live.”

A former student wrote Yale-Read that, “I can honestly say that not a day goes by that I don’t think of and apply something you have taught me. Everything I have learned from you has been invaluable.”

“I believe that it is important to teach students that art and design are ways of communicating ideas,” wrote Yale-Read of her philosophy of teaching. “It is also imperative for them to learn to be problem-solvers, to develop critical thinking skills and to acquire life-long learning skills. My classes are structured to this end.”

Yale-Read continued that as the learning process unfolded, her role was to offer constructive criticism and encourage class participation in group critiques. “Thus, (the students) learn to articulate their ideas about design while benefiting from viewing outer students’ work, and from hearing reactions to their own work from their colleagues. They must understand how their ideas are perceived by others.”

Yale-Read earned a M.F.A. in graphic design from East Tennessee State University and a B.F.A. in art education from Towson University.
