Concert Band Performs Dec. 2

BOONE–Marches, folk melodies and poetic pieces highlight the program when Appalachian State University’s Concert Band performs Dec. 2. The concert begins at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The band is directed by Dr. Scott Tobias.

The program opens with Philip Sparke’s “To a New Dawn.” Commissioned by the U.S. Continental Army Band, the piece celebrates the challenges of the new century.

Elliot Del Borgo’s “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” is inspired by the Dylan Thomas poem of the same name. Del Borgo recreates the essence of the poem in sound.

Thomas Allen wrote music still heard today in rodeos and circuses.

The Concert Band will perform his “Whip and Spur.”

“Shenandoah” by Frank Ticheli was inspired by images of the woods and the river. Ticheli tries to capture the river’s timeless quality and its energy.

“The Dragoons of Villars” by L. Aime Maillart concludes the performance.
