BOONE–This year’s “Novel Experience,” an annual event that benefits

Appalachian State University’s Belk Library, will be held Friday, Sept. 7, at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center.

The festivities begin with a reception and silent auction at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:15 p.m. Cost of the evening is $75 per person. Reservation deadline is Sept. 2. For more information, or to make a reservation, call Patty Wheeler at (828) 262-4973.

The “Novel Experience” features tables decorated around the titles and themes of books. Memorable tables from past years include “Grapes of Wrath,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Girl in Hyacinth Blue.”

This year’s event is dedicated to the memory of Oneida Carpenter, library advisory board member who died in December. Carpenter proposed the “Novel Experience” idea and chaired the committee that planned the event each year.

In addition, author Ernest Gaines, whose book “A Lesson Before Dying” was selected for this year’s freshman and community reading programs, will be a special guest. Gaines also will speak at convocation at the Holmes Convocation Center Sept. 6 at 10 a.m.

The silent auction will be comprised exclusively of Carpenter’s collection of decorative items, donated by her family.

All proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will go to the Oneida Carpenter Library Special Events Endowment which was established by her family.
