David Lang and H. Max Smith Perform Sacred Music Aug. 26

BOONE–Familiar faces return to Boone to open the Organ and Sacred Music Recital Series at Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music.

Alumnus David Lang and faculty emeritus H. Max Smith open the series with a Sunday, Aug. 26, recital beginning at 4 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

Admission is free.

Lang graduated from Appalachian’s music program in 1983. He earned a master of music degree in organ performance from the University of Louisville. He currently is music director at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Great Falls, Va. From 1983-2000 he was director of music at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville, Ky.

Smith is organist at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. He was a member of Appalachian’s faculty for 25 years.

In summer 1999 he was organist at Durham Cathedral in England, replacing vacationing organists.

Smith has played organ recitals throughout the United States and Europe.

The afternoon’s program includes John Rutter’s “Variations on an Easter Theme,” Samuel Wesley’s “Duet for Organ,” Gerre Hancock’s “A Fancy for Two to Play” and Ralf Bolting’s “Toccata Francaise.”
