Learn About Edible Flowers and More During Educational Farm Day
Learn about edible flowers, organic gardening and companion planting during Educational Farm Day at Appalachian State University’s Cove Creek Farm Aug. 25 from 2-6 p.m.
The event is part of the Self-Guided Farm Tour sponsored by the High Country Chapter of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association. Tickets are $5 per car for each farm or $20 per car for a full farm tour pass. Tickets may be purchased at the farm or at the Farmer’s Market at Horn in the West on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The Cove Creek Farm is the teaching and research site for agroecology classes in Appalachian’s Sustainable Development program.
Students and faculty grow a variety of vegetables, edible flowers and herbs in terraced gardens using organic and companion planting principles. Also students and faculty are working to rehabilitate the many apple trees scattered around the property’s forest. The farm features a one-mile hiking loop trail and several large rocks for bouldering.
The farm is located off Laurel Branch Road: take Highway 421/321 North, turn at Skateworld onto Highway 321 toward Elizabethton, Tenn. Continue another mile, then turn right onto old Highway 421. Continue 3.5 miles then turn left on Laurel Branch. Continue half a mile then park along the road near the big barn. Follow the signs from the road.
