Appalachian Scholar and Humorist Gives Presentation July 12

BOONE — Loyal Jones, well-known Appalachian scholar and humorist, will speak at Appalachian State University Thursday, July 12, as part of An Appalachian Summer Festival.

His presentation, “In Search of Faith, Meaning and Humor” begins at 3:30 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Jones was director of the Appalachian Center at Berea College for many years before retiring in 1993. He has written, lectured widely, and taught generations of students about Appalachian values, religion, culture, music and humor.

He has been a major voice in the creation and development of the Appalachian studies movement and is the author of several books of regional humor.

Jones is the second Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Lecturer sponsored by the University Library.

The lecture series is supported by the Carol G. Belk Distinguished Professorship in Library and Information Services funded by Irwin and Carol Belk of Charlotte in 1999.
