BOONE — Dysfunctional families and confusion are featured in the two, one-act plays that comprise the final set of one-act plays at Appalachian State University this spring semester.

Produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance, “The Sins of the Mother” and “‘dentity Crisis” will be performed April 4-7 at 8 p.m. in Greer Arena Theatre on campus.

Tickets are $3 and may be purchased at the box office in Valborg Theatre Lobby weekdays from 2-5 p.m.

“The Sins of the Mother” by Anthony Devaney Morinelli examines alcoholism and the barriers it creates in an Irish-American family. Two maiden daughters are trapped at home with their alcoholic mother where bitterness and resentment replace love and understanding.

Inheritors of their grandmother’s sin, the two daughters seek their redemption.

Heather Houglan directs the play. The cast includes Jen Allman, Marie Anderson, Caryn Crye, Jessie Hanley and Shelby Jennings.

The costume designer is Tara Blake and the stage manager is Kiehl Smit.

The second play provides a radical change of pace from serious drama to hysterical farce. “‘dentity Crisis”

by Christopher Durang is the story of Jane who is being nursed back to health following a nervous breakdown by her relentlessly cheerful mother and her oversexed brother who keeps changing into her father, her grandfather, and her mother’s French lover.

Eventually all of the characters including Jane’s psychiatrist, who undergoes a sex change operation and changes place with his wife, change characters again and become Jane, leaving her with no identity at all.

“‘dentity Crisis” is directed by Maeve McAuliffe. The cast includes Andrea Gilkey, Rebecca Coffey, Brad Evans, Scott Hurley and Jessica Pearson.

The costume designer is Heather Houglan and the stage manager is Aliza Mendelewicz.

This semester’s one-act plays represent a collaboration between the students in the advanced directing class and a costume design class.
