2001 Craft Enrichment Workshops Held

BOONE — The 2001 Craft Enrichment Hands-On Workshops will begin Jan. 22 at Appalachian State University.

All workshops will be held in W. Kerr Scott Hall on campus.

The workshops give students and community members the opportunity to experience many forms of creative expression through learning crafts. A wide variety of instructional forums will allow participants the chance to begin and continue a lifelong hobby.

The first workshop, Pottery-Wheel Throwing, will meet Tuesdays from 6-8:30 p.m., beginning on Jan. 23 and concluding on March 20. An open lab will be held every Thursday from 6-9 p.m.

The class is limited to 12 participants.

Previous clay experience is helpful, but not necessary.

The cost for the workshop is $105 and will include 25 pounds of clay, glaze materials and firing fees.

Lucy Hamilton is the instructor.

The Home Schooled Children’s Pottery workshop will meet on Mondays from noon-1 p.m., beginning Jan. 22 and concluding on March 19.

It is limited to eight participants.

The course is an introduction to pottery with an emphasis on hand building and some wheel throwing.

The cost for the workshop is $85 and includes clay, glazing and firing fees.

Eric Reichard and Kay Dixon will instruct the workshop.

The Intermediate/Advanced Pottery class will meet Wednesdays from 6-8:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 24 and concluding on March 21.

It is limited to 10 participants.

There will be an open lab every Thursday night from 6-9 p.m.

Intermediate and advanced students will continue to explore the use of the wheel as a tool.

The cost for the workshop is $125 and will include 50 pounds of clay, glaze materials, firing fees and open lab.

Eric Reichard will instruct the workshop.

A Jewelry-making class will meet every Tuesday from 6-8:30 p.m., beginning on Jan. 23 and concluding on March 20.

It is limited to 12 participants.

Participants will learn the basic techniques necessary to produce rings, pendants and other items in sterling silver, copper and brass.

The cost for the workshop is $140 and includes all required materials.

Jim Rice will instruct the course.

The Home Schooled Children’s Printing class will meet Fridays from 10-11:30 a.m., beginning Jan. 26 and concluding March 23.

It is limited to eight participants.

The course is an introduction to printing with an emphasis on designing and printing T-shirts.

The cost for the workshop is $85 and includes two T-shirts, ink, transfer paper, film, plates, emulsion and clean-up materials.

April Graham will instruct the course.

A Basket-making class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8:30, beginning on March 20 and concluding on April 12.

It is limited to 10 participants.

Students will explore a variety of ways to make the basic ribbed basket and will work on an individual basis.

The cost for the workshop is $110 and will include materials.

Barbara Chapman Sox will instruct the course.

The Stained Glass workshop will meet Wednesdays from 6-8:30 p.m.

The first session is from Jan. 24-Feb. 28 and the second session from March 7-April 25.

The workshop is limited to six participants per session.

Students will construct a stained glass panel (approx. 11 by 14 inches) using the copper foil method.

The cost of the workshop is $115 per session and includes all materials and tools.

Judy Steiner will instruct the course.

The Beginning Black & White Photography workshop will meet Fridays from 6-9 p.m., beginning on Jan. 26 and concluding March 23.

It is limited to 10 participants.

The course teaches the beginning photographer basic photography techniques, processing procedures and photography history.

Students are encouraged to use a manual 35mm camera, though automatic cameras are acceptable.

The cost for the workshop is $130.

Beck Long will instruct the course.

The Craft Enrichment Hands-On Workshops will also feature an independent study program offering returning students the opportunity to use the facility during open studio hours working independently.

Open studio hours must be scheduled and approved through Eric Reichard.

The cost for the independent study is $50.
