University and Chamber Singers Perform Nov. 5

choral.jpgBOONE — Psalms, hymns and spirituals form the musical core of a Chamber Singers and University Singers fall concert at Appalachian State University.

The vocal groups perform Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. in the Rosen Concert Hall, Broyhill Music Center.

Admission is free and the public is welcome.The presentation is part of the School of Music’s “Organ and Sacred Music Recital Series.”

The program begins with the University Singers performing “Hosana” by Edward Leinbach, featuring soloists Melanie Austin, soprano; Alexandra Walker, alto; and Eddie Adams, bass.

The singers will then perform “O vos omnes” by Pablo Casals and “O Praise the Lord of Heaven” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, featuring Melanie Austin and Stacey Williams, sopranos; Alexandra Walker, alto; Seth Hobson, tenor; and Jonathan Beal, bass.

The performance continues with “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” by Isaac Watts, arranged by Mack Wilberg and featuring Nancy Schneeloch on flute and Alicia Chapman on oboe.

“Poor Man Lazrus” by Jester Hairston, “There is a Balm in the Gilead” by William Dawson, “Jonah!” by Steve Hopkins and “I Can Tell the World” by Moses Hogan follow.

The Chamber Singers open their portion of the concert with “Exsultate Deo” by Alessandro Scarlatti.

Next are “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” arranged by Lloyd Pfautsch from the traditional hymn tune “Warrenton” by Robert Robinson; and “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” by J.S. Bach, featuring Alicia Chapman, oboe; Nancy Bargerstock, violin; Jennifer Culver, bassoon; and Brian Bailey, organ.

The Chamber Singers also will perform “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” by Hugo Distler, “Ubi caritas” by Maurice Duruflé and “Singin’ Wid A Sword In Ma’ Han’, Lord,” arranged by Zsolt G’
