Fitness Testing Offered at Appalachian

BOONE–Area residents can learn more about their health and fitness at the Human Performance Laboratory in Appalachian State University’s Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science.

The lab provides low-cost, research-level quality tests including EKG-treadmill test with measurement of oxygen consumption, resting metabolic rate and skinfold body tests.

The EKG-treadmill test is the best indicator of heart and lung fitness. The test costs $50 and is for apparently healthy individuals only.

The resting metabolic rate test measures how many calories are used each day when resting compared to expected levels. This determines if a person’s metabolism is high or low. Cost is $20.

The underwater or skinfold body tests determine body fat and ideal body weight. Cost is

$10.

All tests are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from

4-6 p.m. in the Human Performance Lab in Room 207 Varsity Gym. Tests are conducted by trained technicians using research-grade equipment. Call (828) 262-3142 to make an appointment, or e-mail David Nieman at niemandc@appstate.edu.
