Center Wins Award for Health Education

BOONE—The N.C. Comprehensive School Health Training Center at Appalachian State University has been honored for its contributions to the health of North Carolinians.

The center was named the 1999 Distinguished Friend of Health Education by the N.C. Association for the Advancement of Health Education for its quality of work, level of professionalism and commitment to school health education.

The N.C. Comprehensive School Health Training Center is a professional service activity of Appalachian’s Reich College of Education. Since 1994, the center has provided workshops across the state for teachers and other school personnel to reduce health risk behaviors in children and adolescents.

Workshops focus on nutrition, fitness and the prevention of tobacco use, drug and alcohol use, violence, and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Donna Breitenstein is the center’s director.

NCAAHE is a professional organization for the fields of health, physical education, recreation, dance and athletics.
